1. Insulate Exposed Pipes
Pipes in unheated areas like basements, attics, and garages are most at risk. Wrap them with foam pipe insulation or heat tape.
2. Disconnect Garden Hoses
Leaving hoses connected can trap water in the faucet, causing it to freeze and burst back into the house. Disconnect and drain them before the first freeze.
3. Seal Cracks and Drafts
Check for gaps near pipes where cold air can enter. Caulk or insulate to keep the warm air in and cold air out.
4. Let Faucets Drip
On extremely cold nights, let warm water drip from faucets served by exposed pipes. Moving water is less likely to freeze.
