Your water heater works hard every day. A little maintenance can go a long way in preventing unexpected showers.
1. Flush the Tank Annually
Sediment builds up at the bottom of the tank, making it work harder and eventually causing leaks. Flushing it once a year clears this out.
2. Check the Anode Rod
The anode rod is designed to rust so your tank doesn't. Check it every 2-3 years and replace it if it's significantly corroded.
3. Test the Pressure Relief Valve
This valve prevents the tank from exploding due to high pressure. Lift the lever (carefully!) to ensure it snaps back and releases a little water.
